Stricken
2011
Performance at Helmuth Projects, San Diego, CA
In Stricken I knit for 24 consecutive hours as a trial of endurance. Spectators were invited to view the entirety of the action by visiting the gallery or viewing a live webcast. This participation held me accountable by keeping me in the sightline of a perceived voyeur, which in turn increased my anxiety. I hypothesized that the produced object would grow increasingly chaotic as I became exhausted and delirious; unexpectedly, my body adjusted and the quality became regulated instead of compromised. Though the documentation reflects the friction of the process, the made object oddly lacks tension.
