A Turning Toward

2011

Dimensions Variable (Installation)

Plaster, wax, lumber, metal hardware.

The purpose here was to make a working mold of a bike wheel with as little distortion as possible, but with many intentionally chosen challenges. To start I chose to make the mold in plaster, which would require many individual mold parts as I worked against the many complications of the form. Undercuts and overlapping components required careful consideration of mold shape, size, and even direction of assembly. The final piece was cast in wax - a material contraindicated with the plaster mold material since it will absorb, adding a further hurdle to overcome.

Process images are shown at the end of the deck.
